  • A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, rectally, in a baby under 3 months.
  • Fewer than six wet diapers in a day, or refusing several feeds in a row.
  • Fast breathing, grunting, or the skin pulling in under or between the ribs with each breath.
  • Floppy, unusually hard to wake, or a cry that sounds nothing like theirs.
  • Not smiling at people, not reacting to loud sounds, or not able to hold their head up briefly during tummy time by 2 months.
