Month 6 · one-glance sheet

Month 6

The halfway point of the first year. Solid foods usually start now, and so does a healthy wariness of strangers.

Just these three, this week

  1. 1
Around 6 months is the AAP-recommended
Time to start solids alongside continued breast milk or formula.
  2. 2
    On the back
On a firm flat surface, in their own clear sleep space.
  3. 3
A high chair or supportive seat for starting solids
And a bib you don't mind ruining.

How much milk

3–5
milk feeds
+ solids
2–3x / day
~4 h
typical gap

Milk feeds drop as solids fill in more of the day. Offer milk before or after meals, not as a replacement for exploring food.

Draft figures for this age, pending clinical review.

Trust the worry. None of this is an overreaction.

  • A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, rectally.
  • Gagging that turns silent, or choking — a baby who cannot cry or cough needs emergency help right away.
  • Not trying to get things that are in reach, or showing no affection for caregivers.
  • Doesn't respond to sounds around them, or doesn't make sounds back and forth with you.
  • Can't sit even with support, and doesn't bear weight on their legs.
